No, we are not an emergency service.  If you feel that your symptoms are life threatening (i.e. heart attack or stroke symptoms, asthma attacks, fits/seizures) or you have a serious wound or uncontrolled bleeding  then you should call 000 immediately or go to your nearest hospital.

We operate as a medical deputising service under strict rules set by the Department of Health. Under these rules we can only provide after hours medical services for, and on behalf, of daytime GP’s.

Our doctors aim to consult with patients within two hours from booking. This is dependent on how many patients the doctor has to see, how complex each case is and where those patients are located.  In preparation for the doctor’s arrival, you will be contacted to advise when they are on the way.  You can request an Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA).

For home visits Radio Doctor Illawarra bulk-bills * all patients registered with Medicare or Veterans Affairs (DVA).

For telehealth bookings, bulk billed * consultations are only available to people who meet eligibility criteria set by the Department of Health.  You will be advised if you are not eligible and offered a private fee consultation from $80.  The operator will confirm the charges during the booking process.

If you are not registered with Medicare but have private health insurance, travel insurance or   overseas student health cover you will be charged $200 via credit card and a receipt issued which can be provided for claiming through your insurer. We do not accept cheques.

Yes, we provide telehealth consultations and also home visits. Call to discuss your situation with our operators.

Yes, additional requirements apply to bulk-billed telehealth consultations. You will be informed by the call centre if you are ineligible for a bulk-billed consultation and what fee applies.

Yes, hard copy or e-scripts can be issued. Doctors will not provide prescriptions for strong painkillers (Schedule 8) or anti-psychotic medications. You need to obtain these from your regular doctor.  Doctors will only prescribe small quantities of other painkillers as it is recommended that you obtain prescriptions for these from your regular doctor.

Yes, doctors may issue a medical certificate but only for short time periods (1-3 days) relating to the specific condition they saw you for.  It is at the discretion of the doctor if they are willing to issue a medical certificate.  You should see your own doctor if you require a certificate for a chronic condition which requires longer periods of leave.

Following the consultation the doctor prepares a clinical report.   This clinical report will be sent to your regular General Practitioner for their records thereby ensuring continuity of care.
